BACKGROUND TO THE SELF ADJUSTING GLAND
BEFORE
FOR YEARS MANUFACTURERS OF ROTATING MACHINERY HAVE TRIED TO COME TO GRIPS WITH THE PROBLEM OF CONTROLLING LEAKAGE FROM STUFFING BOX GLANDS.
PACKING MANUFACTURERS CONTINUED TO IMPROVE THEIR PRODUCT BUT WEAR AND LEAKAGE WERE STILL A LARGE PROBLEM.
THE MAIN PROBLEMS WERE THE DIFFICULTY IN MAINTAINING A CONSISTENT PRESSURE ON THE GLAND FOLLOWER.
RISING AND FALLING PRODUCT PRESSURES COUPLED WITH THE DIFFICULTY OF ADJUSTING THE FOLLOWER IN AN EVEN MANNER WERE STILL THE MAIN REASONS FOR PACKING FAILURE.

1.BY USING A HYDRAULIC/PNEUMATIC CYLINDER TO APPLY A CONSISTENT EVEN PRESSURE ON THE FOLLOWER, DAMAGE TO PACKING'S AND SLEEVES ARE GREATLY REDUCED.
2.PACKING LIFE IS EXTENDED SIGNIFICANTLY.
3.SLEEVE WEAR IS ELIMINATED.

HOW IT WORKS
1. BY SIZING THE CYLINDER TO MATCH THE PRODUCT PRESSURE, AN AIR SUPPLY CAN BE USED TO CONTROL THE FORCE ON THE FOLLOWER.
2.USING A REGULATOR ON THE AIR SUPPLY ALLOWS THE SAME SIZE CYLINDER TO BE USED FOR VARIOUS PRODUCT PRESSURES.
3.THE USE OF A SOLENOID VALVE ALLOWS THE AIR SUPPLY TO BE CUT OFF WHEN THE MACHINE STOPS.
4.AS THE PRESSURE ON THE FOLLOWER IS CONTROLLED PACKING BURNOUT ON STARTUP IS ELIMINATED.

AT PANPAC THE SEAL RESULTED IN A LIFE SPAN OF THE PACKING WHICH RESULTED IN THE PACKING ONLY BEING CHANGED WHEN THE SCREWS NEEDED REPLACING .
